We fully understand Tavern's enthusiasm for Giroud. Last season Giroud was one of the most prolific per-minute hitmen in the EPL. But there's a reason he isn't often played from the start, when he does Arsenal do not score as many goals. What's more, Giroud's goals per minute stats improve when coming off the bench. As Tavern says, he certainly "adds a dimension," just not all dimensions.
He's a great target, hold-up and link-up man, has got a great shot, crosses, passing and vision, but lacks pace, footwork and finesse.
So why not partner him with Lacazette up front? Lacazette is another absolutely top-class player whose link work is exemplary and possesses all the qualities Giroud lacks. Could these two ruthless, prolific finishers link up to devastating effect.
If so, it begs the questions...
Is there a formation that could accommodate such a pairing?
